How To Navigate: Steel & Aluminum Tariffs

Written by Admin | Apr 9, 2025 3:04:37 PM

In an era marked by global economic interdependence, the recent imposition of a 25% U.S. tariff on steel and aluminum imports has sparked a significant trade conflict with far-reaching implications. Announced on March 12, 2025, these tariffs aim to bolster domestic industrial growth but have quickly incited retaliatory measures from key trading partners, including Canada and the European Union. The escalating trade tensions threaten to disrupt international supply chains, inflate consumer prices, and challenge businesses to adapt to an increasingly volatile trade environment.

Proactive Measures for Brokers and Forwarders

A significant aspect of the updated U.S. tariffs is the inclusion of derivative steel and aluminum products. These include items such as wire, cables, bumper and body stampings, nails, fasteners, vehicle parts, pipes, tubes, and construction materials, among other fabricated goods. With these items being affected comes changes in product classifications, invoice documents, reporting of smelting, casting, pouring origins and more. Customs brokers and freight forwarders must work together to navigate these new trade regulations.

Documentation Compliance

  • Ensure import documentation for aluminum includes the primary and secondary countries of smelting and casting.
  • Steel import documentation must specify the country where it was melted and poured.

Invoicing Adjustments

  • Revise invoicing methods so products made entirely of aluminum and steel remain on a single invoice line.
  • Derivative products containing steel and aluminum must be listed on two separate lines: one for the steel and aluminum content and another for other materials.

Stay Updated

  • Continuously monitor changes in tariff regulations and trade negotiations between the U.S., Canada, and the EU.
  • Adapt logistics and supply chain strategies accordingly to mitigate increased costs or delays.
  • Optimizing shipment routes and methods to avoid or lessen tariff impacts.
